Your Credit Report |
Beware Of Credit Repair Companies When disputing items on your credit report, you want the credit bureaus to take your dispute seriously. If they suspect that you hired an attorney or a credit repair company, they may feel that you are frivolously disputing negative credit that really belongs to you. In such cases they may temporarily red flag your account. The idea here is to make them think that you honestly found mistakes on your account and legitimately trying to fix them. Generally credit bureaus do not make it easy to repair your credit. Even with proof that an account is paid or does not belong to you, it may take several tries to have an item fixed or removed. After you have disputed an item, your credit report is returned stating that the negative item was verified. In reality, all they did was check the information that is already in their system. That's not enough. They need to prove it. You should ask them to provide documentation with your signature showing that the account or debt belongs to you. This will make things more difficult for the credit bureau. With everything today being paperless, your signature on a contract is almost impossible to produce and will remove the derogatory item from your credit report. Removing negative information from your credit report takes time, patience and determination. If you can't get an item fixed or removed the first time, don't give up. Keep trying again and again. Remember that raising your credit score will save you thousands of dollars in the long run. Unfortunately this process is time consuming among other things. That's usually one of two reasons why consumers look for help through a credit repair service (the other reason is lack of knowledge, which you will now possess). But even if time is of a great factor, something needs to be done regardless. And if you must hire an attorney or a credit repair clinic for help, beware of companies that: • Want you to pay for credit repair services before any services are provided, unless it's a small set up fee credit repair • Do not tell you your legal rights and what you can do-yourself-for free • Recommend that you not contact a credit bureau directly • Suggest that you try to invent a "new" credit report by applying for an Employer Identification Number to use instead of your Social Security Number • Advise you to dispute all information in your credit report or take any action that seems illegal, such as creating a new credit identity. If you follow illegal advice and commit fraud, you may be subject to prosecution. |
"I couldn't believe it! I checked over my credit report and found an error from an
issue I thought I had worked out years ago. By using your information I was able
to clear it up and could then get that loan I wanted at a lower interest rate
than previously expected" |
